Pet Insurance Companies - How they
Operate
There are many pet insurance companies to choose from and although each appears unique,
there are many common aspects in how they operate. Each will likely have one or more websites, an
administrative front-end, representative insurance brokers and policy underwriters. In many instances,
different pet insurance providers will use the same resources to lower operating costs and improve
efficiency. By doing so, they are able to offer lower cost pet insurance policies to their
customers.
Some companies exclusively provide insurance for pets only within a specific country and others
have associates, affiliates or partner companies that span different countries. There is usually multiple
business layers associated with any type of insurance company and providing a specific product like pet
insurance is not much different.
One distinct difference between insuring individual people and pets is that a pet dog, cat, bird
or other creature is most likely to be considered as property and the policies and regulations are different
than those applied to insuring people. This will likely depend on the specific country operated out of and
the government regulations the insurance company must adhere to.
Websites
Almost always, a pet insurance company will have their own website presence in order to
invite sales, but this is not always the case and website services may be outsourced to an entirely different
company in order to reduce costs or share these costs with other companies.
Most people are familiar with outsourcing and how companies in different countries can provide
the same degree of technical expertise but at reduced costs. A website can be presented across different
countries with only the contact information or local information modified and yet still appear virtually the
same.
Administration
Behind and supporting the website presented is an administrative layer that promotes the sale of
policies, handles individual sales and possibly directly processes insurance claims submitted.
This is considered to be the front-end of the pet insurance company and is responsible for most
of the interaction between individual customers and the costs incurred or the benefits provided.
But these administrative functions can also be outsourced or shared among multiple companies
that offer pet insurance policies. It is not uncommon to search for different types of pet health insurance
and find that they share the same physical address or even telephone contact information.
Insurance Brokers
The purpose of an insurance broker is to provide multiple insurance plans to their clients and
let them select the option preferred based on the advice suggested. In almost every instance, the broker
receives a commission or percentage of the offer presented.
The reason for this is that the broker may be familiar with your history and because they have
greater knowledge about insurance policies than you do, can suggest better options for you to select
from.
This is becoming less important because potential customers can now bypass such brokers and
learn for themselves the costs or benefits of any type of insurance, including those for pets.
Insurance Policy Underwriters
In order to provide an insurance policy for a pet dog, cat or of any type, any company offering
such a plan must have an insurance underwriter. These companies are the ones that receive most of the revenue
and pay out most of the policy claims.
Most likely, pet insurance companies will seek out and use one or more insurance underwriters to
support their business. By using more than one underwriter, the insurance risk is reduced because multiple
companies are sharing both the risk and the revenue.
As you review the different pet insurance company listings pointed to below, keep in mind
that many are sharing their resources as suggested above. This can be easily verified by reviewing the
information about each of them and their background.
